A charitable knot

WATERFALL - Reddam House Waterfall's Grade 8 R class led by teacher Romanda Potgieter sounded wedding bells for their charity project.

“I heard there was a couple from Elandspoort in Pretoria West who had no food,” said Potgieter. “I told my class about it and we have put a food hamper together for them.”

When Potgieter delivered the hamper to the couple’s house, she discovered that their daughter was looking to borrow a plain white dress that she could use as a wedding dress. They did not have the money to have a wedding.

“So after telling my register class, we decided to make the couple’s dream of a fairytale wedding come true.”

The result was that Audrey and Johan van Staden tied the knot and celebrated at Reddam Waterfall’s Early Learning School with 70 adults and 25 children in attendance. The Grade 8 R pupils entertained the children while the parents had fun.

The Grade 8 R pupils and parents collected money to buy food for the wedding. Grade 10 pupil Liam Laughland was the DJ at the reception, Grade 7 pupil Hannah Dannheiser baked the wedding cake and Grade 10 pupil Megan Koster sang to the happy couple during the ceremony.

“I am so proud of my class,” said Potgieter. “They are only 13 to 14 years old and they were dedicated and worked very hard towards this wedding. These young people learned so many new skills such as the value and satisfaction of giving without excepting anything in return, and they were at the wedding to see the joy and appreciation on the couple’s faces which was very rewarding.”

Potgieter thanked Graeme Crawford and Sheena Crawford-Kempster, the owners of Reddam House Waterfall, for allowing the wedding to take place at the school.
