Kitty and Puppy Haven opens new premises

PRESIDENT PARK - Tiny barks, little purrs, and a whole lot of melting hearts abounded at the launch of Kitty and Puppy Haven on Modderfontein Road, President Park.

The turn-out showed just how much the Johannesburg community missed the animal sanctuary, which first started in 2000.

The haven was founded by Samantha Berger, who is also the director of the animal shelter.

Berger was emotional as she expressed her utter joy at re-opening the haven in Midrand.

The non-profit organisation rescues puppies and kittens from townships and rehabilitates and re-homes them.

Berger said, “When I look around at what we have built in just three-and-a-half months, I have to give a huge thank you to the staff, the public and the animals’ fosters: you guys deserve a huge thank you for opening your hearts and your homes to the animals while the building was in progress. Thank you to each and every one of you who put their blood, sweat and tears into building this shelter.”

At the opening, shoe manufacturer Hush Puppies pledged R400 000 to open a clinic and surgery wing for the haven, through the sale of 2014 calenders and their Puppy Love campaign. The excitement was tangible as Berger and marketing manager of Hush Puppies, Liane Williams, cut the new haven’s ribbon.

There was even a Hush Puppy dog, who is available for adoption, at the ribbon cutting.

Berger welcomed more community members to share in the joy of the sanctuary on its new premises and to adopt one of the many puppies and kittens in need of loving homes.
