Society pushes pedals to raise awareness
VORNA VALLEY - The Society for Animals in Distress, based in Vorna Valley, was represented by 44 riders in the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge.
The society’s riders were dressed in brightly coloured riding jerseys with the society’s logo, sponsored by Tunley’s, EXP Auto, MySchoolMyVillageMyPlanet, Cyclone SW and Ivory Tower, and did well to finish the long race.
Carmen Douglas-Kilfoil, from the society’s fundraising team said, “Many of our riders were not only supporting our cause for the first time, but were also first-time riders at the Momentum 94.7 Cycle Challenge – we wished them luck at a carbo-lunch, sponsored by Pize e Vino, Midrand, on our premises the day before the ride [16 November].
“It was great fun as well as a great privilege to spend some time with these champions for our cause, who have given our organisation a lot of ‘air-time’ within their business and social networks this year while raising funds on our behalf for the race.”
The society also asked cyclists to keep them in mind for next year’s cycle challenge.
The society is a non-profit organisation that recognises the critical need for primary health and professional veterinary care for animals in the townships of Johannesburg. It depends solely on the generosity of the public and corporate businesses for sponsorships and donations.
These funds are employed yearly in the animal-care education of children, skills development of residents in the 14 working horse communities of greater Tembisa and oversees 100 000 veterinary treatments rendered by seven mobile units, to name a few.
The next fundraiser on the society’s list is a Carols by Candlelight at its premises at The Paddocks, 20 Moerdyk Street, Vorna Valley, from 5pm to 8pm. Bring folding chairs and bankets but no dogs are allowed for veterinary health care reasons.
