Bonthlebame hosts 16 days of Activism breakfast

MIDRAND - Bontlebame, non-profit organisation, hosted a leaders' fundraising breakfast in aid of abuse against vulnerable people.

The event was held at the Protea Hotel in Midrand. Guest speakers included Nomboniso Gasa, a public speaker on gender and politics, and Kave Bulambo, founder of Women Across Boarders. Motivational speakers Mpho Mazamane, Lillian Barnard and Dr John Tibane also spoke about leadership and abuse. Mpho Mazamane, who is an HIV/Aids activist and a gang-rape survivor, spoke about living a fulfilling and successful life, particularly after gruesome abuse.

SABC news anchor Ayanda-Allie Paine was MC for the event, which is Bonthlebame’s fourth annual fundraising event, and forms part of the 16 Days of Activism for No Violence against the vulnerable campaign. Paine said, “I am honoured to be part of a campaign that recognises the importance of women and seeks to address issues of abuse.”

Founder and director for Bontlebame, Kea Modise-Moloto, said that the levels of abuse in South Africa are shocking. “The speakers opened our eyes to the reality of abuse that some people live with on a daily basis. Abuse should not have a place in our community, but it is alive.”

Modise-Moloto added, “As of 2 December, the amount that has been raised is currently at R34 000, before deduction of expenses, more money is yet to come through as pledged.” Modise-Moloto said the funds raised at the event would be used to host dialogue sessions to empower people against abuse in rural areas, townships and informal settlements. Modise-Moloto added, “We take information to the vulnerable and empower the people so that healing can take place.”

Bontlebame thanked all the sponsors who have shown support for the cause.
