Reconciliation for conservation

PRESIDENT PARK - The Day of Reconciliation was celebrated with conservation talks at Lory Park Animal Sanctuary on 15 and 16 December.

Sharon Salomon of Race Against Extinction, a non-profit organisation that runs in partnership with Lory Park Animal Sanctuary, highlighted the huge loss that South Africa had suffered with the death of Nelson Mandela, and there was a need to play out the theme of reconciliation. She said no healing or change could be brought about unless people worked together to make a difference. She urged people to exercise respect with regards to conserving wildlife.

Race Against Extinction helps to educate pupils in rural schools about conservation, endangered species and anti-wildlife trafficking.

Salomon hosted talks to educate families on conservation, while Kelly Duigal took Geisha, a 10-month-old tiger, for a stroll to the delight of the audience.

Salomon said that while many people said they did not like to see animals in captivity, for many animals it was too late and it was an unfortunate necessity to breed them in captivity to prevent them from becoming extinct. She spoke about many of the big cats at the animal sanctuary including the tigers, jaguar and white lion.

She encouraged guests to support Race Against Extinction by purchasing gifts and contributing funds.

With the festive season in full swing, families are welcome to visit the park to learn about the animals and even to pet some of them.
