Constitution is for children too

MIDRAND - On a piping hot day in Ivory Park this summer, Lee-Anne Flack took the hands of two children at Tumelo Home to dance and sing praise.

Flack, the public relations officer for International Society for Krishna Consciousness (Iskcon) in Lenasia, was helping the Isckon Midrand Hare Krishna Food for Life campaign with a food distribution.

It is no coincidence that Flack showed kindness to the children as she has a passion for the little ones. She is the author of Constitutional Kids, a book that makes learning the constitution easy for children.

Flack’s journey with constitutional law began at Stellenbosch University where she studied an LLB degree. She also worked in parliament after her studies, but she grew frustrated that she could not reach people on a grassroots level.

Working with people is something Flack was used to, as she worked as a river guide on the Orange River in Namibia, lived in a Hare Krishna temple for a few months and volunteered as a teacher at the Food For Life school and orphanage in India.

“After working with children in India and with our own township children who were poverty stricken, disease ridden, abused, neglected and suffering from malnutrition, the imperative importance of children knowing and understanding their rights dawned on me.”

Flack hopes children will learn ‘their uniqueness is their beauty’ from the book. “They must embrace their individuality, never give up on their dreams and strive to be the change that they want to see in our country. I want them to fully realise that no situation is impossible for them to overcome and that they are more powerful than they can ever imagine. They just need to know how to tap into that power,” she said.

In the coming months, the book will be transformed into stage production and will embark on a national road show to educate children on the constitution.

The book can be purchased from Books Galore in Lonehill shopping centre.

Flack also speaks at schools and functions on human rights and her soul altering journey to India.
