Pikitup apologises for staff’s behaviour
MIDRAND - Pikitup has apologized to a resident of Vorna Valley for the behaviour of some waste collectors.
Jo Koko had complained that, on 12 December 2013, Pikitup waste collectors did not collect her bin after they made remarks she did not like.
“I was working in my garden when they were collecting bins, they were disrespectful and whistled at me. I was not happy about that and ignored them. The waste collectors then decided to leave my bin behind and collected other bins. I took pictures of them and told them I would lay a complaint,” said Koko.
She added that her bin was also not collected, “because I did not give the waste collectors any treats over the festive season. They tend to collect bins of people who give them treats”.
Pikitup spokesperson Desiree Ntshingila said the alleged behaviour of the Pikitup waste collectors towards Koko was unacceptable. “We would like to apologise to Jo Koko. Koko’s bin should have been collected along with the others. The only notice we gave was that on 25 December our staff would not be collecting bins. We have forwarded the complaint to the Midrand Depo for further investigation,” said Ntshingila.
She added, “We have had a problem with waste collectors being given treats over the festive season for a job they must do. We appeal to residents to not give Pikitup staff any treats while they work.
“In December some people got arrested for asking for donations on behalf of Pikitup. It starts off with treats, then they harass residents for donations. Pikitup is not asking for donations and anyone asking for a donation on behalf of Pikitup should be reported to the police.”
Ward 112 Councillor Leverne Young said residents must be patient. “Over the festive season and during public holidays residents must be a little patient as waste collectors may also be on holiday. Bins are usually collected a day after the holiday – but waste collectors must not punish residents by not collecting waste for any other reasons.”
