Body corporate raises squatter concerns
MIDRAND - Trustees and the body corporate of Broadwalk Crescent in Midrand have raised concern over squatters.
According to the trustees, the squatters on Broadwalk Street in Halfway House are causing “great concern” for residents of the Broadwalk Crescent complex, as they worry that squatters will appear and “the value of the property will be brought down”.
The problem of squatters is an ongoing one in Midrand. Johannesburg Metro police spokesperson Edna Mamonyane said, “The only thing the Metro police will continue to do is to remove squatters and burn down their makeshift homes and the plastic they collect. There is no permanent thing Metro police can do to remove squatters – the problem is housing. Until that is solved, people will keep putting up informal settlements around the city.”
To report squatters call the Metro police emergency number on 011 375 5911.
