One second for one wish
JACQUES Esterhuizen is a four-year-old boy who has been diagnosed with neuroblastoma cancer.
The Midrand resident has undergone a number of procedures, including three stomach operations and three lumber punctures. He has also had his marrow cultured, as well as numerous scans, blood plate analyses and chemotherapy.
Despite this, he has made three wishes: he hopes to donate as much food as he can to the animals at Midrand SPCA, go to the beach, and to always play at Papachino’s.
While his second and third wishes are being taken care of, Anton Bosman of Summit Cycles Midrand is lending a hand to help with Esterhuizen’s first wish.
Bosman started the Just A Second campaign to change the mindset of road users to respect those who are vulnerable on the roads, such as cyclists, pedestrians and runners.
On the campaign’s Facebook page, Bosman said, “People are always in a hurry, pre-occupied and totally oblivious of what is going on around them. Quite simply, it takes just one second to save a life, one second of looking at that cellphone, one second longer to get to the office. One second can save lives.”
The Just A Second campaign has planned a mass cycle ride from outside the Mugg and Bean in Carlswald Lifestyle Centre to Midrand SPCA on 1 February.
Cyclists are asked to bring a can or packet of dog or cat food with them.
The support has been tremendous on the Facebook page with bikers also wanting to join the ride. Bosman called on motorists to join the ride by also following in their cars.
“Three simple wishes, one life and ‘just a second’ to think of the impact we could have on this young man,” concluded Bosman.
