Two suspects arrested for attempted highjacking
In the afternoon of 29 January police and patrol officers chased a Ford Fiesta that had been linked to several robberies and hijackings in the Wierdabrug, Riets area.
Gauteng provincial spokesperson Sergeant Obakeng Mabaso said, “The five suspects in the vehicle attempted to hijack a truck at Wiedabrug transporting goods. Patrol police called for backup and arrested the suspects on Samrand Avenue between Rietspruit and Rooihuiskraal roads in Midrand. Two suspects were arrested, the other three escaped and are still at large.”
Mabaso told Midrand Reporter that “there was no shooting that took place during the arrest as had been reported on social networks”. Emergency services had also been called to the scene after reports that there was a shooting.
The two suspects were in possession of two unlicensed firearms.
On Tuesday 28 January the same suspects in a Ford Fiesta had attempted to hijack a bakkie in Riets. Patrol police chased the suspects, but they managed to escape.
