Scouts celebrate anniversary

MIDRAND - The founder of what is now the World Scout Movement, originally known as the Boy Scouts, was born on 22 February 1857.

District Commissioner of Scouts for Gauteng Northern District, Don Norris said, “To this day, that event is marked by Scouts all over the world in one way or another, on the Sunday occurring nearest to that date. This year it occurs on 23 February, and the Scouts and Cubs of the Northern District of Gauteng will have their traditional Expo at Waverley Park, corner Scott and Stirling Streets in Waverley, Johannesburg, to which the public are cordially invited.”

The day starts at 9am with a ceremonial parade and this is followed by a “Scouts’ Own” short, non-denominational service. The day is then open to all sorts of activities and displays of scouting activities.

In addition, because Scouting is very much community oriented, various sections of the police will be taking part and showing their skills.

During the course of the day, which closes at 2pm, there will be numerous competitions for the Cubs (boys and girls aged from seven to 11). There will be stalls available to sell limited-menu foods and cooldrinks.

The groups involved come from a widely dispersed area and include Halfway House, Berea, Alexandra, Sandringham and Waverley. More groups are currently in process of formation.

A certain aura of ‘mystique’ seems to hang over what Scouting is all about and this expo is aimed at dispelling this aura and really showing what this non-racial, non-denominational, non-gender specific organisation is all about.
