Trucks cause traffic issues

PRESIDENT PARK - Two residents have complained of the bad driving by trucks in President Park.

William van Rooyen and a resident, who has asked not to be named, said trucks carrying huge loads speed on Brand Road and Fouche Street and Swart Drive.

Van Rooyen claimed that Eazi Access Rental, a company that provides products and services to construction, mining and industrial sectors, has some truck drivers who have been seen speeding. “These trucks carrying heavy equipment even speed past the stop sign causing other motorists to veer off the road. This has happened on many occasions.”

Eazi Access Rental spokesperson Shawn Donly said safe driving is key to the company. “All our trucks are fitted with tracking units which monitor the driving behaviour of all drivers. If any of our drivers do not stick to road regulations we will take steps to address the issue.”

Donly added, “We will investigate any complaints if residents call and provide us with details of trucks that drive badly.”

Department of Roads and Transport spokesperson Octavia Mamabolo said the National Roads Traffic Act specifies that the maximum load allowable on public roads is 56 000kg. “If the mass exceeds that limit then the conveyor needs to apply for permission from the MEC of Roads and Transport’s office under the abnormal loads condition. The abnormal load drivers know that they will be breaking the law if they speed on roads when carrying abnormal loads.”

Eazi Access is asking residents to call and report bad driving by any of their truck drivers on 011 312 2118011 312 2118.
