Midrand shows support for Cansa
MIDRAND - The overcast and rainy morning of 1 March did not diminish the Midrand community's support of the Cansa Shavathon events.
Community members came out in numbers to re-style their hair: through cutting off, shaving or colouring their locks to raise funds for Cansa and provide hair to be made into wigs for cancer patients.
Chairperson of Barbeque Downs Community and owner of Candy Bubbles Swim School, Candice James, showed tremendous support. She raised funds through spray-painting the hair of the swimmers at the swim school from 24 February to 1 March and donated 20cm of her ponytail to Cansa.
Her family Richard, Madyson and Morgan James sprayed their hair in support of the day too.
Carlswald Lifestyle Shopping Centre hosted the shavathons in the car park with the help of the Midrand Rawson Property Group from 24 February to 1 March. Mix FM kept the crowds entertained and the Ward 112 branch committee was there to show support on 1 March.
Candice Taylor of Rawson Property Group said five percent from any of the property sales obtained from the Shavathon would be donated to Cansa too.
Al Karaki of the Ward 112 branch explained the branch had started a Midrand Cancer Support Group. Chairperson of the Ward 112 branch Rabelani Dagada said, “The cancer journey can be difficult and lonely, so it made sense to establish a monthly Midrand Cancer Support Group to provide a network of caring people to help patients and their families, and we need everybody’s assistance to spread the word,” said Dagada.
Neotel Midrand hosted a Cansa Shavathon along with its family day, to thank employees’ families for their support throughout the year, at its premises on Old Pretoria Road.
The company’s managing director and CEO Sunil Joshi handed over a R20 000 cheque to Cansa on behalf of the Neotel employees and their families to show support for those living with cancer.
Silvia Crawcramp and Sakkie Vocal collected the cheque and thanked Neotel for the support.
Crawcramp, who has survived cancer twice, explained the funds were desperately needed and would help purchase necessities for cancer patients.
Remax Central Midrand also contributed to the Shavathon and kicked off the week on 24 February with staff and agents collecting R2 000 for Cansa.
