Road users cautioned about rain
MIDRAND - Sipho Ndlovu sent a photo to Midrand Reporter about a pothole he accidentally drove into during 4 March's rainy weather.
“It is so bad driving on the roads in Midrand in rainy weather with potholes as huge as a dish. I drove right into a pothole on Lever Road,” Ndlovu said.
Ndlovu acknowledged that the Johannesburg Roads Agency had patched up some of the potholes on Lever Road, but, according to him, motorists “still get nasty surprises” from huge potholes covered in rain water.
Ward 93 councillor Annette Deppe said that residents should exercise caution on wet roads. “Many roads in Midrand are full of potholes and are dangerous; if you get a flat tyre you can claim from the roads agency for your expenses.”
Johannesburg Roads Agency spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers confirmed that motorists can claim from the agency for tyre punctures due to potholes, although it’s “a long process”.
“Most importantly, we would like to ask that residents drive safely during this rainy season and keep in mind that pedestrians, bikers and cyclists also use the road,” she added.
To get a claim form and all information on submissions contact hotline@jra.org.za. The claim form has to be attached with copies of documents such as driver’s licence, police affidavit, photos of damage to vehicle, photos of the pothole that caused damage, and other insurance paperwork.
