Food warms hearts

Lunch provided for New Jerusalem Children's Home.

DESPITE the wet and chilly conditions outside, children from New Jerusalem Children’s Home were filled with warmth in the form of a lunch on 5 March.

The home was chosen as one of the beneficiaries in Tastic’s corporate social investment programme and a lunch was prepared by Tastic chefs. A year’s supply of Tastic products and five cooking pots were also donated.

The chefs also shared some wholesome and cost-effective recipes with the home’s kitchen staff.

The children were treated to a jumping castle, although the rainy weather cut the amount of jumping time.

Groceries are a permanent need on the home’s wish list, and much gratitude was shown for the food donations.

The home is based in President Park and houses 80 abused and abandoned children; the home also operates according to “green” principles by recycling and managing its waste output. Some of the children even live in a recycled structure made out of 28 shipping containers. The home is also relatively self-sufficient, as staff members grow their own vegetables for cooking and selling.

As the home looks to the future, its co-founder and CEO Anna Mojapelo explained it aims to be completely self-sustainable by 2021. A resource centre and halfway house for girls are among its plans, but it needs help from the community to help it expand.
