More potholes litter the roads
MIDRAND roads took a battering in the recent heavy rains but the Johannesburg Roads Agency said it was working hard to ensure the roads were safe for road users.
The roads agency’s operations manager for marketing and communications Bertha Peters-Scheepers said, “Each regional team is currently securing the worst affected areas; they are systematically repairing one area at a time, with preference given to main arterial routes. We thank the public for reporting all road and storm water issues to us, and thank them for their patience while we attend to the backlog resulting from the heavy rains and floods experienced.”
Many community members have already joined Midrand Reporter’s #Fixthispothole Twitter campaign, which calls on the public to send a photo of their pothole with a reference number for the community newspaper to escalate to the roads agency. Community members can notify the newspaper by emailing the photos or by posting them on Midrand Reporter’s Facebook page or tweet @MidrandReporter #Fixthispothole.
Many motorists sent photos and notified Midrand Reporter of potholes. Brand, Berger, Le Roux, Lyndore, Mercury and Fouche roads are among the roads littered with potholes.
Some residents have resorted to filling in sand and stones in some of the potholes but Peters-Scheepers said it was important to report the potholes to the roads agency as soon as possible, so that the team can secure the roads temporarily until permanent repairs can be done.
Some Kyalami residents, however, welcomed the potholes on the roads as they believed it would make it more difficult for motorists who use the Kyalami roads to rat-race through the Greater Kyalami Conservancy.
Peters-Scheepers responded, “It is important to report the potholes to the Johannesburg Roads Agency as soon as possible so that the team can secure the roads temporarily until permanent repairs can be done.”
Until the roads agency fixes the roads, they caution motorists to adhere to a speed limit of 40km per hour or less so as to drive safely around the potholes.
