An advantage to potholes

MIDRAND - Two unemployed youths who live in Midrand have found a way to make money for bread.

Sinethemba Nyembezi and Sizwe Nkabinde said since 11 March they have been filling up potholes on the corner of Liebenberg Road and Sagewood Avenue, and grateful motorists give them a rand or two for their help.

“The money is so little but at the end of each day we have enough to buy bread for supper,” Nkabinde said.

Nyembezi said, “We decided to fill up potholes on this road for now because a lady who lives in Noordwyk got stuck [while driving] on 13 March thanks to a huge pothole on Liebenberg Road. We helped her move her car and she paid us to thank us. We realised that some motorists might pay us for this.”

In a response to a similar incident in which residents in Kyalami filled up potholes, Johannesburg Roads Agency spokesperson Bertha Peters-Scheepers said that, even though residents fill up potholes, they must report the potholes to the agency so that the team can secure the roads temporarily until permanent repairs have been done.
