Kidney health in spotlight

MIDRAND - Life Casternhoff Clinic in Midrand observed World Kidney Day on 13 March by hosting an informative exhibition at the hospital.

Renal unit staff members and the resident nephrologist Dr Bongi Mahala handed out flyers and educated the public about kidney health. Dr Mahala said, “The aim of World Kidney Day is to raise awareness of the importance of our kidneys to our overall health and to reduce the frequency and impact of kidney diseases and its associated health problems worldwide.”

Dr Mahala said chronic kidney disease is a progressive loss in kidney function over a period of months or years. “If detected early chronic kidney disease can be treated, thereby reducing other complications and reduce the death rate and disability from chronic renal disease.”

According to Dr Mahala, to reduce risk of kidney disease:

  •  Exercise regularly
  •  Maintain and control blood sugar levels
  •  Check blood pressure regularly
  •  Watch your weight and salt intake
  •  Drink water
  •  Avoid smoking
  •  Avoid taking unprescribed medication regularly.
