Teaching the community about environmental awareness

MIDRAND - The Greater Kyalami Conservancy which spreads from Blue Hills and Crowthorne in Midrand to Kyalami, Sun Valley and Glenferness, crossed over its boundary to Diepsloot on Human Rights Day.

Chairperson of the Greater Kyalami Conservancy Kristin Kallesen said the aim was to raise awareness for environmental concerns and to work with the Diepsloot community for a better community and healthy environment. Bontle ke Tlhago, a recycling cooperative operating the Diepsloot Recycling Buyback Centre, led participants in a street clean-up and pointed out all of the recyclables that can be reclaimed. Kallesen said many passersby inquired about how they could earn by recycling and the cooperative gave details of the prices they pay for reclaimed materials.

Water Amenities and Sanitation Services Upgrade Programme, known as WASSUP, showed off the newly renovated communal toilets. Over the past few weeks they have been assisted in upgrading toilets, taps and drains by the Health Habitat and World Skills Foundation.

The toilets got a colourful coat of paint from the Footballer4Life, working with a group of children from Muzomuhle Primary School they painted messages such as ‘Love yourself’ and ‘We are born free and equal’ and ‘Respect your environment’, reminding everyone to keep the toilets and environment clean, explained Kallesen.

She further added that the conservancy joined in the clean up and awareness campaign as did Diepsloot Arts and Culture Network, demonstrating some of their environmental awareness projects through the arts.

The Noweto Business Chamber, individuals and representatives of Diepsloot organisations, also showed their support. All agreed that the day was a success and look forward to working as a collective in future.
