Tembisa Hospital responds to allegations

MIDRAND - In February a woman identified only as Nonhlanhla* from Kaalfontein told the Midrand Reporter that her baby fell after being born.

Nonhlanhla said nurses left her to give birth alone and her child fell off the hospital bed after being born.

Midrand Reporter contacted the Tembisa Hospital and its management promised to investigate the matter.

On 27 March Tembisa Hospital told the newspaper that it has done all it can to meet with Nonhlanhla to no avail. Tembisa Hospital spokesperson Lesibana Ledwaba said, “Obstetrics and gynaecology matron Ndubane contacted the complainant but Nonhlanhla did not come to the hospital. On 14 February quality assurance representative Manana Mabe contacted the complainant who again promised to come and meet Mabe at the hospital on 14 February but she never came.”

Ledwaba added that, “The hospital’s recommendation is to close the case due to unavailability of the complainant. She does not respond to messages we have left on her phone as well.”

When contacted by the newspaper all Nonhlanhla said was, “The baby is well.” She did not comment on why she did not meet with theTembisa Hospital staff as planned.

Ward 80 councillor Queen Sikweqa said she was not aware of the matter but was worried about the child. “We have department of health volunteers in our ward who got door to door to speak to residents. If Nonhlanhla agrees to give us her address we will send a volunteer there to check if the baby is ok and why she does not want the hospital to assist.”
