Staff win against pupils in soccer
GLEN AUSTIN - Glen Austin High School's soccer fun day festival took place on the 27 June.
The Grade 8 and 9 pupils played against each other in a game which saw the Grade 9 pupils victorious with a score of 5-3.
The Grade 9 pupils then played against the staff team. While both teams put up a challenge, the staff came out victorious, winning 3-2.
Sports co-ordinator Loshnee Iyer said, “The day was one of great victory as it was an amazing team-building for the whole school. The pupils put a lot of pressure on the staff but the wisdom of the staff was the difference on the day. However, the staff definitely left the field with some bruises and gashes, a good war is what it was [called].”
The day culminated with a braai for pupils and staff.
Iyer said this will be an annual event and the whole school is very excited about the tradition it has started.
The pupils and the staff team played their hearts out and Iyer said she was very proud of the effort made by every member of the school. “We are a young school and it’s these little traditions that make us a great force and sets our school apart from the rest,” she said.
Individual awards were also handed out to the pupils. Magda de Wet took the Most Enthusiastic award, Michael Mvuthi took the Player of the Tournament award and Samkelo Mvelase took the Golden Boot award.
Loshnee said this was the best way to end the tiring but very successful term.
The event was attended by the school’s CEO Shadi Laka, directors Nick Wanjau and Sandile Msibi, business developer Antoinette Engelbrecht and parents.
