Help babies’ home on Mandela Day
MIDRAND - Botshabelo Babies Home is gearing up for this year's Mandela Day on 18 July, and is calling on the community to support the cause.
Donated items will be distributed on the premises of the Crowthorne-based home.
Funding co-ordinator for the home, Michelle Hinrichsen said community members could help Botshabelo by donating items for their babies home, pre-school programme or for Olievenhoutbosch families in need. They could also give a cash donation.
Hinrichsen put it in perspective, saying that at the babies’ home, R67 covers bread for a week, R670 covers milk for a month and R6 700 would help to equip pre-school teachers with teaching tools.
The home extends a helping hand to the Olievenhoutbosch community with its pre-school teacher training programme to give teachers the skills to teach pupils at the many pre-schools in Olievenhoutbosch.
Hinrichsen said second-hand clothes and household goods were also needed.
She also said that the Grade R pupils at Urban Kids Educentre, based on the same property as the babies’ home, who were moving on to Grade 1 next year, were in need of stationery.
“These children are from underprivileged backgrounds and families, and cannot afford the long list of stationery items that Grade 1 requires. You will be helping each child that receives a pack, get a great start to his or her primary school career,” said Hinrichsen.
“Every donation makes a difference, every item brought to us will be put to good use, distributed quickly to those in need and will help us to carry on caring for our children with the highest standards.
“It’s on Mandela Day that we realise afresh how generous our nation is – and we cannot tell you how grateful we are for your help on this day,” said Hinrichsen.
She urged community members to spend their 67 minutes for Mandela Day by loading up their items in their cars, driving them to the home, taking a photograph of what has been donated and driving back home.
“There will be coffee on sale at our premises on Mandela Day and the proceeds of coffee sales will come to Botshabelo. So be sure to bring your cash along – it’ll be the best coffee you’ve had in Jozi,” she said.
