Blood supplies needed

JOBURG - The South African National Blood Service only has 2.1 days of blood stock available on a national level.

This is less than half of the required five days that is needed for transfusions for thousands of patients on a daily basis.

The blood service requires 3 000 units of blood a day in order to meet their quota, but in the grips of winter blood donations decrease due to an increase in the flu virus, and the fact that schools and universities are on vacation.

The blood service urges all regular donors and members of the public who meet the minimum requirements to donate blood as soon as possible. To donate blood you must lead a healthy sexually safe lifestyle and must be more than 50kg and between the ages of 16 and 65.

Midrand has its own donor centre which is open for blood drives every Thursday between 8.30am and 6pm. It is located in unit 4 and 5 of Gallagher Place, on the corner of West and Richard roads.
