Live ammunition found in Midrand school

MIDRAND - Midrand Police and the Department of Education jointly raided and bust pupils from a school in Midrand on 22 July.

Midrand police spokesperson Constable Matome Tlamela said police and the Youth Desk crime prevention conducted school raids at two schools under the command of Captain Lionel Chetty. “SA police Midrand Vispol policing, K9 and Metro police and 12 dogs found nothing illegal at the first school they went to,” she said.

“At the second school, police found two plastic bags with dagga, a wrapped newspaper containing dagga, one 9mm live round ammunition, three cigarette lighters, matches, two [packs of rolling] papers and abandoned cigarettes.”

Tlamela said the cigarettes were abandoned by pupils during an assembly drug search.

She added, “The items were booked into the exhibit book and no arrests were made. Police random searches will continue in schools around Midrand.”

The Gauteng Department of Education said the raids at the two schools were a result of a partnership between the department and law enforcement agencies.

In a statement, the department’s spokesperson Phumla Sekhonyane said, “The department priorities school safety; from time to time the department conducts raids to rid our schools of illegal substances and weapons.

“… Pupils who were found in possession of weapons or illegal substances will be taken through a disciplinary process and sanctioned accordingly. All our schools are linked to police stations for rapid response.”
