Feed SA helps community in Ivory Park
IVORY PARK - FeedSA continues its work in townships around Gauteng with the official opening of a community centre and creche in Ivory Park.
Qoqisizwe Care of the Aged and Zandile’s Day Care had both been under construction for eight months but are now beacons of hope for the community.
“We have now built a soup kitchen so that we can do a feeding scheme for the elderly; two classrooms for the creche so that the children in the surrounding area can visit; and we’ve also secured the place with walls and tarred [cement]. Every single person here – about 200 people – is going home with something,” said Candice Etberg, co-executive director of the organisation.
The organisation not only built the centre – which used to be a funeral home – but on the day of the opening, volunteers came with beanies, gloves and food parcels to give to the community. Etberg added that all the teachers at the creche did an
18-month course prior to its opening, so that they could be fully skilled to
look after the children.
“What sparked the idea is that… Menzi Twala is my mentor, [and]
he notifies me of all the places that need assistance that don’t get government
help in the township,” explained Etberg. “We are a non-profit organisation and
we do feeding schemes, teacher training and building and renovations in the
township,” she added.Tsekwa Mavhungu, a resident at Ivory Park, was happy to have been present on the day. “I feel happy that I’m here celebrating with my community. It is joyous indeed,” said Mavhungu.
