New grass for society

VORNA VALLEY - The grounds surrounding the new animal hospital at Animals in Distress in Vorna Valley are looking a little greener.

The construction of the new animal hospital disturbed much of the surrounding grounds and the area was in need of restoration.

Ward 112 councillor Candice James and executive general manger of Animals in Distress, Heather Muller, called on Hydro Mulch, a company that professionally deals with erosion control and environmental rehabilitation, to plant 50m² of grass. The grass was laid earlier in July and Hydro Mulch pledged to donate 1 000m² of grass and their services free of charge for the remainder of the project.

Roley Noffke, managing director of Hydro Mulch said they will be hydro-seeding the three hectares of land surrounding the animal hospital and will also be doing the landscaping. She said hydro-seeding was the application of specific organic compounds in specific proportions to help repair disturbed soils.

The hydro seeding will help the growth of grasses that will form the diet of many animals on the property.

Although Hydro Mulch has pledged their support, the success of this project hinges on the donation of grass from the community of R15 per m². The society needs 4 000m².

Muller said anyone willing to spare a ride-along lawn mower will be greatly appreciated. The Hydro Mulch teams hope to be done by December and with the help of the community this is surely possible.
