Giraffe dies on N1

N1 HIGHWAY - One of two giraffes travelling on the N1 has died after it struck its head on the highway's bridges.

Beaulieu resident Lorraine Smalberger of Pekingese Rescue saw the two giraffes on the side of the highway, travelling from Midrand to Pretoria. Smalberger said the animals were in a stationary truck that was parked between Botha Avenue and John Vorster offramp.

Centurion Rekord reported that Tshwane SPCA were investigating whether the giraffes suffered animal cruelty.

Eyewitnesses reported seeing the animals hitting their heads off a number of bridges along the N1 highway.

The animals were being transported to Warmbaths.
