Veggie tunnels planted at a school in Midrand

MIDRAND - A school is one step closer to building food security for its pupils and community thanks to a donation.

As part of its Caring for our Communitites programme, Nedbank Personal Loans donated a vegetable tunnel to Mikateka Primary School in Midrand. Environmental and sustainability manager at Nedbank, Nina Wellstead said, “The school is the first beneficiary of the banks’ R50 000 donation to schools in Johannesburg.”

Wellstead explained that the vegetables grown inside the tunnels could be used to supplement meals prepared as part of the school’s feeding scheme, and pupils can take some of the vegetables home, or sell them to the community.

She added that increasing food security was a key focus of the initiative, and the bank welcomed being part of the solution of finding new ways to address this whilst uplifting the community.

Principal Mandla Sibanyoni said the school appreciates the help from Nedbank.

“We want to thank the bank for alleviating poverty through the vegetable tunnels in our area,” he said.|
