Cuppa for Cansa
MIDWAY MEWS - Midway Mews shopping centre's marketing department had a Cuppa for Cansa event on 9 August.
Karin Gerber of the marketing department for the centre and her team sold cookies and coffee to customers at the shopping centre. She said, “Midway Mews is a community centre, we are having a Cuppa for Cansa to raise awareness of cancers such as prostrate cancer and to support the community any way we can.”
Marketing co-ordinator for Midway Mews Lizelle Botha said, “The event offered a fun way to raise money for the work the Cancer Association of South Africa does in local communities.”
She said all proceeds from the day will go towards the cancer association.
A clinic nurse, Sister Rykie Venter was on hand to tell men at the centre about prostrate cancer’s detection and early warning signs. A finger-prick test was done for some men who showed an interest in knowing if they have the cancer or not. Sister Venter explained, “One in 23 South African men have a lifetime risk for prostrate cancer.”
She said factors that increase the risk of cancer include men who are 40 years of age and over, a poor diet, smoking, lack of exercise, family history of the cancer, obesity and alcohol intake, which must not be more than two standard alcoholic drinks per day.
A drummer and singer, Lorenz Jooste provided live entertainment at the centre during the event. The Centurion resident has been involved in the music industry for the past 30 years, and took part in the initiative to show support for the Cancer Association of South Africa.
