Flight to wild freedom for Lory Zoo owls
MIDRAND - Lory Park Zoo and Owl Sanctuary recently said goodbye to six of its special, temporary tenants, five of them being spotted eagle owls, and one barn owl.
“I had rehabilitated some owls that had been brought to the zoo for various reasons, including being hit by cars, being poisoned or having a disease,” said Jeanette Fourie of the zoo.
Once these owls were stable and eating well by themselves, they were then moved to a pre-release enclosure on the property of one of the veterinarians who occasionally helps the zoo in Midrand, she said.
Fourie explained that when they were flying well, their enclosure was opened and they were let go.
“We still provide food for them in the area [where] they were released and will continue to do so until they stop coming back for food,” she said.
Fourie assured animal lovers that as these owls were adults when they were injured, they had a good chance of survival because they already knew how to fend for themselves.
