Ilanga II finally revealed

MIDRAND - The solar-powered car Ilanga II, a successor to Ilanga I, has finally been revealed.

RS Components SA, based in Kyalami as one of the sponsors, was at the University of Johannesburg.

“RS Components is very excited as the countdown to the Sasol Solar Car Challenge continues,” said the company through their marketing communications manager, Tanya Erasmus.

On the evening of 5 August, the UJ Solar Team unveiled what the Ilanga II will look like. Ilanga II is their solar-powered vehicle set to compete in the 2014 challenge.

The solar car challenge is a bi-annual race whereby universities from all over the world participate with their custom-made solar vehicles, built by the students.

This year the race will start in Pretoria on 27 September. It will continue to run over the course of eight days, and will end in Cape Town on 4 October. Whereas the Ilanga I could move at a speed of 40km/h, the slick, new Ilanga II can run at 100km/h.
