‘Take strays to SPCA’
GLEN AUSTIN - Apart from being the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals (SPCA), the organisation is also the municipal pound for the Midrand area.
The SPCA rescues and re-homes stray animals. During their stay, animals are fed and given medical attention.
Animals such as three-year-old Romeo, who is a cross Labrador and Great Dane, find shelter at Midrand SPCA, based in Glen Austin. His owner could no longer afford to look after him and he was brought to the society. Because he was an only pet, there is no history of his behaviour with other pets. However, he seems content to be stroked and has shown no aggression towards people, said the society.
They said that anyone who finds a lost pet can contact the SPCA directly or take the animal to their local veterinary hospital and they will contact the society on the finder’s behalf. They stressed the importance of doing this, as the SPCA is the only legal compound in the area, and more often than not owners come looking for their lost pets at the compounds first.
It is also important to note that strays could be harbouring diseases and might need to be cleared by a veterinarian.
All animals brought to the society are checked for positive identification and are then either placed back into their owners’ care or placed for adoption.
