MMC honors elderly women
RABIE RIDGE - MMC for Public Safety Sello Lemao met with elderly women in Rabie Ridge to engage with them to honour Women's Month at the Rabie Ridge community hall.
Lemao listened to concerns raised by women from the community, and women residents of Rabie Ridge Golden Oldies Home and Ipupeng Mayibuye Old Age Home. The elderly women told Lemao that they did not feel safe in the community due to recent protests in the community. They also stressed that some parents knew that their children took drugs and as parents they protected them instead of reporting them to the police.
One of the women, Elina Phihlela said she was excited to meet the MMC. “We have so many problems in the community that he can help us with,” she said.
Lemao emphasised to the women that their role in the community was important and the City of Joburg had platforms to address their concerns through initiatives such as 10plus meetings.
“I will come back to address some of the issues of safety and crime that have been raised today, to see how best we can tackle concerns you have as women in the community,” he said.
Ward 110 councillor Steven Lamola said it was important to honour women’s contribution to society. “The MMC is here to assure elderly women in the community that the City [of Joburg] is there for them.”
The elderly women were given blankets and lunch.
