Tembisa standstill, as residents protest

MIDRAND - Reports of a service delivery protest in Tembisa claimed that the township came to a standstill on the morning of 29 August.

Apparently residents of the nearby Birchwood suburb were unhappy about electricity tariffs.

Roads leading to areas of Phomolong and Birch Acres Mall were closed off by Metro police due to protesters burning tyres and throwing rocks at vehicles.

Noko Masemola (@tthegreatone) tweeted, “[Residents] of Tembisa started protesting at 3am in this cold weather. Who in their right mind would do that in this weather?”

Residents of Sophiatown in Tembisa subsequently joined the protest, for reasons unknown.

A heavy police and Metro police presence was reported, however calm was restored following the submission of a memorandum to the Mayor’s office by the township’s residents.
