Service delivery protest in Ebony Park
EBONY PARK - Angry Ebony Park residents took to Allandale Road on the morning of 16 October to protest against poor service delivery.
The residents blocked roads using bricks and branches of trees, said eyewitness Tshepo Monyamane.
“They were chanting ‘enough is enough’,” he said. “One of the community members said they have been voting for over 20 years and nothing has changed.” The residents said they were sick and tired of poor service delivery. Monyamane added that residents were also protesting about the use of the drug nyapoe by children of the township.
“At the moment children smoke the nyaope drug which is killing the community, ” said Monyamane. “They attribute this to the lack of proper information centres such as libraries, and parks and entertainment centres being built for the community.”
Community members also said they wanted to see the upgrading of sewer systems, streetlights, water and sanitation.
Lieutenant Colonel Alstair Subramanian of Ivory Park police said, “Everything was resolved peacefully.”
