Suspect threatens residents

MIDRAND - A handful of residents from Kanana allege that a suspect who is out on bail for murder is threatening them.

The suspect allegedly convicted of murder, came out on bail a few weeks ago.

Two people from the community tried to rob and harass him in his shack. A day later residents burnt the murder suspect’s shack, but he escaped with minor injuries.

The residents who did not want their names in the paper have also accused Rabie Ridge Police for not taking the suspect’s threats against residents seriously.

“We spoke to the Station Commander who wanted us to meet with the suspect and talk about the threats, but we do not feel safe to do so. He may come after us.”

Rabie Ridge Police station commander Colonel Phostick Maoto has denied that police wanted residents to meet with the suspect face to face over allegations of threats made to residents by the suspect.

“The residents came to the station to inquire about the suspect’s bail conditions and found the suspect at the station. The suspect pointed out a few of the people he claims are also threatening him. No meeting was called by police,” said Maoto.

Maoto explained that police have received reports from the community that the suspect is threatening the community and has targeted certain people.

“We took statements from everyone involved and forwarded the statements to court to be effected as part of the suspect’s bail conditions. We want the community to stop threatening mob justice, and the suspect to stop threatening certain individuals. Let the law take its course.”
