Khuli Chana files lawsuit against police minister
MIDRAND - It is reported that South African rapper Khuli Chana will sue police minister Nathi Nhleko for R2.3 million for the incident which saw two police officers shoot at his vehicle on the N1 in Midrand in a case of mistaken identity in October last year.
Police officers shot at Khuli Chana’s vehicle after they mistook him for a kidnapper. Khuli Chana’s hand and back was injured in the incident. Police had been chasing suspects involved in a Bedfordview kidnapping who were using the garage as a ransom drop-off point.
In September, the charges of attempted murder, reckless use of a firearm, reckless endangerment and failure to use reasonable precautions to avoid danger against the two officers involved in the shooting were dropped
The charges were dropped in an out-of-court settlement.
Khuli Chana reportedly said he was suing the police minister for the emotional trauma that the police put him through in the incident.
The papers filed in the Johannesburg High Court reportedly say that Khuli Chana was “humiliated” by having to lie face-down on the ground and firearms pointed at him. It was also reported that Khuli Chana incurred permanent scarring, psychological shock and future medical expenses.
It was reported a second claim from Khuli Chana said he was suing the minister for the police’s claim that he tried to kill the police with his motor vehicle.
It was reported that the minister had not seen the lawsuit papers yet.
