Midrand runners club’s December run
MIDRAND - Runners from all around Midrand and nearby neighbourhoods awoke early on 6 December to make their 5am start for a 50km run.
The run which had been dubbed the End of year 50km Run, started and ended at Vodaworld’s Virgin Active in Midrand.
The run was organised by Cindy Nkomo, Funeka Zaula and Collin Mothlabi.
Nkomo, who is also a runner said they saw a need to have a non-competitive run for residents of Midrand as there was no such event in December.
The run, in its third year, started with only eight members in its inaugural year, grew to 12 in the second year, and this year 34 runners participated. “We were inundated with phone calls and emails from people who wanted to participate, but they had only heard about it when we had closed acceptance to the run,” Nkomo said.
The reason for the growth in popularity of the run might be because it is ideal training for the Two Oceans and Comrades marathons. “Most runners start their training season for these marathons in January, so fitness is very important at this time.”
Nkomo was happy with the turnout this year but hoped for better participation in the future.
“We are hoping to attract more runners as the years go by and hope that our local retailers and residents will support and promote this event,” she said. “Hopefully, in the form of sponsorship and participation, and any other way to make it a successful and a standing annual event.”
