Life’s sweet for Ark’s new mom

CHARTWELL - The only thing sweeter than Ark Animal Centre's newest mom are her two beautiful pups.

The Chartwell-based shelter is the leading facility in South Africa that specialises in the treatment and care of pregnant mother dogs and puppies.

According to Candice Eilertsen of the shelter, their newest mommy was brought to them two weeks before she was due to give birth because her previous family did not want her anymore. “We called her Sugar because she is just so sweet,” Eilertsen said. “She’s a cutie-pie, a proper lap dog.”

Sugar was being housed at Must Love Dogs, the boarding kennel next to Ark Animal Centre while waiting for a new home. On 12 February the owner of the kennel called the staff of Ark Animal Centre because she suspected Sugar was going into labour. Tracy Otto, manager of Ark took Sugar home overnight and the next day at exactly 12 midday Sugar gave birth to two healthy and beautiful puppies.

“It was the quickest, easiest delivery we have ever assisted with,” Eilertsen said. “Sugar had this ‘I’ve got this sorted’ attitude and was quite confident in her ability to deliver her pups. We just sat on the sidelines and watched.”

Sugar’s very special Friday-the-13th pups are growing nicely and will be up for adoption along with Sugar in six to eight weeks time.
