Meet Ivory Park’s .co.za all-girl team

IVORY PARK - NINE Grade 10 girls from Ivory Park Secondary School had a fun day exploring ideas related to Internet registry at the high-tech world of the ZA Central Registry (ZACR).

During a Cell C Take a Girl Child to Work annual initiative, the Internet registry’s CEO, Lucky Masilela said the schoolgirls learnt how the registry administers over one million domain names ending in co.za, web.za, org.za, net.za and many more.

“We were pleased to showcase how we keep South Africa’s Internet running to the schoolgirls, because this year is the 20th anniversary of when the first South African web domain names were registered,” he said.

Each pupil received her own .co.za domain name and e-mail address, as well as 10 additional addresses for family members.

Nancy Ralepata, an administrator at the school who organised the outing said, “The girls had fun, the company has decided to keep in touch with the girls weekly to encourage them to take up careers in information technology.”

Ralepata added that the schoolgirls now call themselves the .co.za team.
