Thuthukani Centre raises awareness about child protection
MIDRAND - To commemorate Child Protection Week, Thuthukani Centre, Ivory Park police, Johannesburg Metro police and other stakeholders held a campaign to highlight issues affecting children.
Miriam Chabalala, an auxiliary worker at Thuthukani said, “The centre works with 250 children in its day care and aftercare programmes. We wanted to raise awareness around child protection as most of the beneficiaries we have, have been affected by different forms of abuse.”
Children and staff from the centre presented a play and read poetry to entertain attendees. The campaign was sponsored by Keller Williams Realty. Operating principal for Keller Williams Realty Midrand, Sharon Jordaan said, “We got involved in the campaign as part of our annual engagement in charity work.”
Ivory Park police spokesperson Neldah Sekgobela mentioned that Thulani Mahamba from Medsa and Metro police officer Andrew Makgoera provided key information on children affected by abuse.
“All the organisations and police made their appeal to community
members to respect children and not harass them physically and emotionally. Parents must both take the responsibility of their children and love them,” said Sekgobela.
