Three car jammers busted

CARLSWALD - THREE suspects were arrested for being in possession of stolen property comprising two laptops and two iPads at Carlswald Lifestyle Shopping Centre on 2 July.

This after police were called to the scene where the victim alleged that his laptop had been stolen from inside his car. Police spoke to the car guards who pointed out the suspects and the vehicle they were driving.

Midrand Police Station commander Colonel Steven Moodley said the incident was one of many. “Many car-jamming incidents have been reported at the centre since beginning of the year, some of the stolen items were recovered,” he said.

The centre’s security manager Paul Grabe confirmed that the arrests had taken place. “In the past three months there have been about four incidents at the centre. Many people claim they were car jammed but we have not managed to prove this. We think some people say that for insurance claim purposes.”

Police searched the suspects’ car where they found two laptops and two iPads. All three suspects were arrested and detained at Midrand Police Station and will appear in court.

After the incident, customers took photos of the suspects and posted them on social media. Moodley, however, urged people not to do this as the case could be jeopardised and even thrown out of court.

He said, “When a suspect is arrested, police have to link his case to other cases or take the suspect to an ID parade. If photos of the suspect circulate on social media before the ID parade, police investigations are affected.”

Pictures of suspects can only be published by the media if their faces are not shown, after the suspects have appeared in court, or if their photo is released by police as a wanted person.
