A member of the residents association, Melissa Worman said, “We would like to thank JMPD Bylaws division for removing illegal posters and signs around Vorna Valley and surrounding areas.”
Worman thanked Metro police officer in charge of effecting outdoor advertising bylaws in Region A, Sergeant Ralph Borias, for responding to the community’s concerns.
Borias said, “We are pleased that the community is happy with the service they received. In general, Midrand has a lot of illegal posters and signs and we will continue to take them down.”
Sections of outdoor advertising bylaws include the following:
- No person may erect any advertising sign or use or continue to use any advertising sign or any structure or device as an advertising sign without the prior written approval of the council
- No advertising sign erected and displayed with approval contemplated in subsection may in any way be altered, removed, re-erected or upgraded, other than for maintenance work which may be required for the upkeep of an advertising sign, without prior written approval of the council.
The owner of an advertising sign must ensure that such sign is designed or located so as not to, to name a few:
- Be detrimental to the nature of the environment, streetscape, urban design or detract from the architecture of any building on which or where such sign is to be located by reason of abnormal size, appearance, intensity of illumination, workmanship, design or its existence
- Be unsightly and not comply with minimum distances as prescribed.
Any advertising sign on a public street or facing a public street, including any provincial road controlled by road traffic signs must, in addition to any other requirement in terms of these bylaws, comply with the following requirements including:
- No advertising sign may have red, amber or green as its main colours
- No advertising sign may be connected to any electricity supply without the prior written permission of the electricity supply authority concerned and such permission must, on request by an authorised official, be presented to him or her by the owner of the advertising sign concerned.
Violation of Outdoor advertising bylaws fine are as follows:
- Poster R200
- Banner R300
- Board R500
- Painted advert R500
- Pasted adverts by means of adhesive/glue R1 000
