Midrand CBD receives a touch-up
HALFWAY HOUSE - The departments and municipal entities of the City of Johannesburg, together with the Community Workers Programme and the traders in the area, recently conducted a short, but intense, touch up of Midrand CBD.
The area covered was from Church Street to James Crescent and Old Pretoria Road to Richards Drive.
City of Johannesburg citizen relationship manager Region A, Pierre Nel said, “Service delivery inspector of the area, Lesiba Monakedi, did a survey of hotspots that needed attention and co-ordinated the various corrective actions for the day. The Johannesburg Roads Agency repaired several kerb inlets, removed silt and levelled verges.”
Roads that were touched up by the roads agency were Richards Drive, Gallagher Drive, Kingsway, James Crescent, Old Pretoria Road and Le Roux Avenue. Bollards to prevent illegal parking on the sidewalk were installed along Grand Central Boulevard. Brick paving was also installed on the sidewalk of Penny Lane.
Nel added that City Power fixed several broken streetlights while City Parks and Zoo pruned trees on the sidewalks and islands. “Metro police officers concentrated on illegally-parked vehicles and removed eight car washers on the road. Pikitup also picked up litter on all the CBD streets, while the Health Department’s environmental health staff educated traders and hawkers on the various bylaws applicable to them.
Regional director of Region A, Abigail Ndlovu emphasised, “The CBD needs to be in tip-top condition to ensure that it remains a vibrant commercial district and attracts more investors.”
Chairman of the Johannesburg Chamber of Commerce and Industry Midrand branch Ernest Mahlaule and Ben de Klerk, co-ordinator of JCCI in Midrand, also showed their support for the programme by joining the clean-up. Mahlaule commented, “The chamber will continue to participate and would like to implore all stakeholders, including business and communities, to take part in maintaining a cleaner and more environmentally-friendly Region A. This is imperative to attract more investment and reduce crime among other benefits.”
