Books before cricket says MCC

MIDRAND - Midrand Cricket Club recently launched a partnership with Umqhele Senior Secondary School which will see the school pupils getting a step closer to their dreams.

Vice chairman of the club, Tshoko Moloko, said the club wanted to make an academic difference in the lives of the pupils, but they also wished to recruit undiscovered, young talent from the Ivory Park school. “First and foremost, we want to tell you about the mathematics programme that we are currently talking with your school about implementing,” said Moloko as he addressed the room filled with Grade 8 and 9 pupils. He further told them about the Master Maths programme, which is a computer programme designed to give pupils maths lessons and to be used as an online teaching tool by their teachers.

Moloko did not specify as to how the programme would be rolled out, however he did say that they would also ensure that the Grade 12 class of the school had access to it. “Everything will first be discussed with your school and your parents will be notified. This should happen by 1 September.”

The club will also play a sort of big brother role to the pupils. “Your teachers will be able to submit names of pupils that need someone in their lives to guide them.”

“As MCC players, we all have corporate careers outside of cricket, so if you need advice on schooling and any other social skills [we will avail ourselves] to advice you.”

Kubin Govindsamy, also from the club, said this was especially important because, “As a cricketer you have a limited number of years to play. Even then, there is no guarantee that you will play at a professional level. It is good to have a back-up plan.”

The club also invited the pupils to a cricket clinic that will be held on 12 September, where Govindsamy said they hope to find some of Midrand’s young talent, to see to the continuation of the club.
