Dog found in manhole near JRA
GLEN AUSTIN – The Midrand SPCA rescues a dog from an open manhole on Dale Road.
The Midrand SPCA recently found a dog shivering in an open manhole near Johannesburg Roads Agency’s (JRA) depot in Glen Austin.
SPCA inspector, Jerry Seemise said they received a call from a member of the public who heard a sound coming from the manhole.
“We reported the manhole on numerous occasions to JRA. They did not give us a reference number and the manhole has yet to be covered,” said Seemise on 20 April.
Midrand Reporter contacted the roads agency and they said the manhole belonged to Ekurhuleni Municipality, however, seeing as it posed a threat to small animals, they would ensure that it was covered. The depot manager, Niels Mahlo, said they would cover the manhole with slabs.
“As for the rescue dog, he is recovering well at the SPCA,” said Seemise.
“He is currently in our stray kennels, but since seven days have passed and no one has come forward to claim him, we will be putting him up for adoption soon.”
Seemise said they are facing a serious problem of an increased number of dogs coming into their kennels with no identification evident on the animals.
“We advise dog owners to either put a tag on their pets or put a microchip in them as this allows us to contact them should their pet wind up in our kennels. The tag is R30 and the microchip is R250,” he explained.
Seemise said dog owners should also take precautionary measures when it comes to the safety of their beloved pets. “Walk your dogs on a leash to avoid them straying away from you and being hit by cars,” he advised.
