MIDRAND – Midrand family makes it to the semifinals in a stokvel cooking competition.
Stokvel groups around the country were invited to enter the 2016 Stokvel Cooking Challenge sponsored by White Star Super Maize Meal and Royco® in partnership with Move! magazine – and a Midrand family made it to the semifinals and came third.
The competition sought to show off the stokvel groups’ creative culinary skills and offered them a chance to win a share of the R50 000 cash prize.
At the recent semifinals, held at the Big Save Distribution Centre in Pretoria, The Motho Ka Batho Stokvel Group, Midrand’s Sabani Family Club and Reiteretse Club, competed against each other in the cooking challenge.
Reiteretse Stokvel impressed the judges, which comprised singer, actress and White Star celebrity chef, Lucia Mthiyane, and MasterChef SA 2014 runner-up, Siphokazi Mdlankomo and won the competition. Reiteretse Stokvel will represent their region in the finals taking place on 4 June in Rustenburg.
The Sabani Family Stokvel member Phiwe Sabani said, “We are all members of one family and we entered the competition because we enjoy cooking together.”
