Vorna Valley mast concerns resident

MIDRAND – A Vorna Valley resident is displeased with the recent erection of a mast by Vodacom in the area.

Midrand’s Vorna Valley Ext 2 resident, Thandi Nogwanya said she is concerned about a mast which was recently erected by Vodacom next to her property.

Nogwanya, along with her neighbours, were allegedly not consulted about the erection of the mast. The resident fears that the mast will make the area an electromagnetic radiation zone and, therefore, unsuitable for human habitation.

The City’s deputy director of Environmental Health, Nicky van Niekerk, said there is no scientific evidence that cellphone masts pose any danger to humans and, furthermore, said the City of Johannesburg does not have any health bylaws regulating this issue.

According to Nogwanya, the mast is unsafe, especially for children, and is built next to a creche which teaches 40 children.

Spokesperson for Vodacom, Byron Kennedy, said the mobile service provider is aware of the issues raised by the Vorna Valley resident.

Kennedy has confirmed that Vodacom obtained all the necessary approvals from the relevant authorities before the mast was built on the site. “As a company that looks to put customers at the heart of what we do, we are currently in consultation with the resident and are confident that an amicable solution will be found to allow Vodacom to provide the network coverage that is necessary for the area,” concluded Kennedy.
