Rubble in the wrong place

MIDRAND – The owner of the truck said he was out of town, while the construction boss denied he's in construction.

A local company owner did not hesitate but acted swiftly against a truck driver who dumped rubble at an illegal spot close to his business.

It was a normal business day when Mike Bellamy of Tyres2000, at the corner of James Crescent and Old Pretoria Road, noticed a truck dumping rubble near his premises. He took cell phone pictures of the truck and recorded the truck’s registration number. The truck had a KwaZulu-Natal registration number and the company name and details were displayed on the door of the vehicle.

Bellamy allegedly called the number that was displayed on the door of the truck. “I spoke to a ‘Mike’ who said he was given permission to dump there by a ‘Grant’ who denies knowing the dumping crew and also that he is not in construction.

“Judging by the noise in the background and his hesitancy to talk to me, he is in construction and knew exactly what I was talking about,” said Bellamy.

Midrand Reporter contacted the number provided on the door of the truck. A man, who introduced himself as Mike Dube, and owner of the company said he was out of town when the incident took place.

“A contractor hired one of my trucks to move rubble. I asked him if he would need a dumping spot and he said he had one. I was surprised to receive a call from a man who said that my truck was seen dumping at an illegal spot,” alleged Dube.

He also said that he does not tolerate illegal dumping. Provincial spokesperson for Metro police, Edna Mamonyane said people should take the registration number and pictures of vehicles dumping waste illegally. “They must take down a description of the vehicle and report it to us. We will fine the company and order it to clean up the waste,” said Mamonyane.

She added that fines start at R2 000.
