Ward 112 builds 40 beds for the needy

MIDRAND – By the end of the year, 100 beds will be made to honour Nelson Mandela's 100th birthday.

In celebration of Nelson Mandela’s 100th birthday, volunteers under the leadership of Ward 112 councillor Madeleine Hicklin finished making 40 beds to give to the needy.

Hicklin said they aimed to make 100 beds by the end of the year to honour Mandela. The beds are made from the wood of pallets and were distributed to disadvantaged people in wards 80 and 110 which includes Kanana and Rabie Ridge.

“About 30 members of the community took part in the initiative in the past two weeks,” she said.

“Today we will finish 11 beds which will bring the number of beds made to 40. They will be distributed to the two wards with the assistance of the DA PR councillor Nicole Rahn.”

Hicklin said they had received donations from community members in excess of R14 000 through the Let’s Transform Midrand organisation to buy mattresses for the beds at a cost of R260 each.

To contribute call Hicklin on 082 744 5155.
